“Let us make our weddings picturesque,” was the editor’s clarion call, & plea, in the April 1919 Brides issue. “Vogue seeks to give suggestions that will transform that correct & proper charm of that correct & proper wedding into something which more nearly approached the dream that every woman knows.” George Wolfe Plank was tapped to conjure a bridal reverie for the cover. Taking center stage is a fantastical creature bride who steps out from a forest of draperies blooming in flowers and a dove-adorned headdress, illustrating what form a bride dressed in the “the perennial silver of fairyland” could take.
