Andreas Cellarius is best known for his Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica, a fascinating celestial atlas and a remarkable achievement of the golden age of Dutch cartography. This map of the heavens is a star chart after Julius Schiller’s Christianized Heaven, Southern Hemisphere, wherein constellations feature Old Testament saints rather than pagan deities. It was first published in 1660 by Johannes Janssonius of Amsterdam as one of twenty-nine hand-colored double-folio maps included in Cellarius’s atlas.
